The enchantment of a summer garden. Maybe it’s a community garden, a few potted plants on a front porch, or a vegetable garden worthy of a farmer’s market. Regardless of the size of the garden, there is a spark of magic in even the tiniest plot of soil. The unsurpassed beauty of the mystical dance that happens between flora and fauna. The garden beckons, in its own unique voice, for us to practice mindfulness.
What is alternative medicine? According to Merriam-Webster, alternative medicine is any of various systems of healing or treating disease (such as chiropractic, homeopathy, or faith healing) not included in the traditional medical curricula of the U.S. and Britain. I often write about methods that may be considered alternative modalities to enhance our well-being. This may include a plant, food, activity, or supplement. Rarely do I utilize only one method, instead, I apply the holistic approach to my life. This means that instead of viewing a symptom or an issue as needing to be “fixed” or eliminated, I view the body as a whole. The whole includes our physical, mental, and spiritual aspects.
I overheard someone at the grocery store complaining about having to weed their garden. I began to wonder about the varieties of weeds they may have growing in their yard. Also, were they aware that many plants referred to as weeds actually offer healing properties? Don’t get me wrong, I have my own fair share of plants that I remove from my garden, too. And this is only to protect the plants I am currently nurturing. However, there are many plants that I haven’t personally invited into my garden that are more than welcome to stay.
Juice detoxes are quite popular these days. From the simple do-it-yourself recipes to the more structured programs. For the most part, the end goal is the same- to detox the body. Our bodies are constantly detoxing, our bodily functions are proof of this. However, there are times where we may need to facilitate the process. For this, juice detoxes are a great way to achieve this goal. Of course, there are dietary changes, supplements and many other methods of detoxing the body. And quite often, a combination of all methods is utilized for optimal results.
Even though it was over 20 years ago, I have a distinct memory of one of my Tae Kwon Do masters reminding us to “tend our own garden and not waste our time looking over the fence at the neighbors garden.” At the time, as we understood, it was with the intention of encouraging our group of testing students to work on our own training.
It’s no secret that children are prone to living less inhibited than most adults. This becomes more apparent during the summer months. Why is it that children seem to live more holistically than adults? Ironically, the average child has no idea what the word holistic even means. They are just being, just living, embracing a set of living ideas that’s a distant memory for most adults. What are some ways that children naturally live more holistically?
Did you know that a plant that belongs to the same plant family as coffee may be growing in your yard? Galium aparine, also known as cleavers, is part of the Rubiaceae family. The fruit of this plant can be harvested, then dried and roasted. Brew as you would regular coffee. However, this is a tedious process. Thankfully, there are more useful benefits to growing and harvesting this plant.
Up here on the mountain, the month of May is the most undecided month yet. It toggles between spring, winter, and summer. Sometimes all in one day. For example, this past week had varying temperatures of 57° to 85°. Since the kids are home-schooled and my husband works from home, lunch is prepared with that in mind. On warmer days we may have a substantial salad. For cooler days, and sometimes even in summer, we enjoy soup. This soup is a veggie soup, a sort of “whatever is in the fridge” type of soup. So it varies every time.
